What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a system of medicine that has been practised for thousands of years in China and other parts of East Asia. It encompasses a range of practices including herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage (tui na), exercise (qigong), and dietary therapy.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on the concept of Qi (pronounced “chee”), which is the vital energy that flows through the body along pathways called meridians. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, illness and disease occur when the flow of Qi is disrupted or imbalanced. Treatment in TCM aims to restore the balance and flow of Qi within the body.

Herbal medicine is a major component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where specific combinations of herbs are used to address imbalances and promote holistic health. Acupuncture involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points along the body’s meridians to stimulate and regulate the flow of Qi. Massage, exercise, and dietary therapy are also used to support overall health and well-being in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

While TCM has been practised for centuries and continues to be widely used, its concepts and practices are sometimes viewed with scepticism by Western medical practitioners who prioritize evidence-based medicine. However, research into various aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine, such as acupuncture and herbal medicine, continues to grow, and there is increasing interest in integrating certain Traditional Chinese Medicine practices into conventional medical care.
